Welcome to Bay Head Historical Society's Loveland House Museum.
When members of the Loveland family settled in this region around 1837, the land at the head of Barnegat Bay was an area of cranberry bogs, beach plum bushes and marshlands which provided a habitat for fish, birds and migratory fowl. This abundant land also provided these early settlers with a good livelihood.
In 1867 the Loveland Homestead, currently the home of The Historical Society Museum, was built by Charles Stout for his daughter Lorah Stout upon her marriage to Charles Cook. By 1887 the family had grown and the back part of the house was added to accommodate their 7 children.
The Loveland family acquired the house in the early 1900’s and continued to reside there until the Bay Head Historical Society purchased the property in 1997. At the time the house had fallen into disrepair and after a two years renovation the homestead opened as a museum in 1999. The Loveland Homestead Museum houses a continually changing display of artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, furniture, decoys and other treasures from early Bay Head, Mantoloking,Loveland years.
The gardens on the property represent a typical Victorian garden, a lilac memorial garden, an herb garden and a sea grass garden. These gardens are maintained in an environmentally friendly manner.
The Dale building was acquired by the historical society and moved to the property in 2001. The Slade Dale cottage is a celebration of the sailors of Barnegat Bay, especially Slade Dale who was a noted sailor in the area, who undertook truly memorable sea voyages. For many years he lived in this cottage at the end of the dock at his marina. The Emma C. Berry dingy is in front of the Dale cottage.
